Outward Bound School (OBS) Lumut 2011

Back to basic, eat only what is given, do things as instructed.

Day 1- Saturday
Gathered early in the morning then set out from the gathering point. Stop at Rawang R&R for breakfast then toilet break at 2 more places. After the toll, it took quite a long time to get to Lumut, so deep in. There was a roadblock along the road into Lumut, 1 of the bus got stopped by Police/ JPJ (they want $$$ ba).
NO Phone, No money, No IC/Passport, surrender all food stuff, surrender all electronic items.

Day 2- Sunday
This is the day when all the activities started. Each group has a few Watch (team), and activities are carried of in group, but each Watch does it together. We learn the different ways of tying the rope, how to build tent for group and also building the tent for individual camping. Group tent are build by using 1 sheet or more for the ‘roof’ and side ‘walls’, and another sheet is place on the floor as a place to sleep. For individual, only 1 sheet is use for everything, wrap the sheet of tent on a rope and it forms the whole tent. After the mini learning session, we played a game where the group is divided into 2 teams, and each team has to move to the opposite side. each time only 1 person is allowed to move, you are not allowed to ‘overtake’ or jumps pass your own teammate and you can only jump across ONE person from the other team if needed. It’s a game to see how well we co-ordinate and work together, after all this is all about team building.
After the ‘chair’ session, we move on to another activity, climbing the ropes. It’s something like many rows of ####. It was not difficult, but can be pretty tiring as it requires strength to pull yourself up, as well as overcome the fear of heights. It is an introduction for another up coming activity. In the afternoon, we learn how to use the compass, read maps, and measure the distance and how to select the most suitable route. After the briefing, we were given places in the form of 6 digit compass readings. After confirming the location with our instructor, we pick a leader, pace counter, navigator, and tracker. This is the first trip into the jungle, and the instructor is asking us to go in along as he believes that we can do it. The starting point was to climb up a steep hill, it was a tough start but it made later parts feel much easier. It was not a long path, but we got ‘lost’ at a few points as the road can be confusing and both looks like the right path. We manage to finish it in 1 hour; the fastest record is 45 mins. After dinner was a briefing for our first expedition into the jungle and subsequently camping by a lake side. We was given a list of items that need to be brought like the backpack, 1 gallon bottles, jerry can (super heavy stuff), cooking utensils, tent sheets, tent pins, mess tin (for eating and cooking), map, compass, and etc. apart from those item, we also had to pack our own personal belongings and we was also given food stuff to be carried to the camp site.

Day 3- Monday
Morning after breakfast, we pack our lunch into the mess tin. After another short briefing with our instructor (which followed us on our tracking), we set out for the camp site. We had to go through 4 peaks before we can reach the actual camp site that we would spend the night. It took us a long time before to reach the first peak. We keep climbing up and up, and thought we had reach, each time being told that it was nearby already and that we have to go on much higher. Peak 2 to peak 3 was pretty fast even thought the distance is about the same as before, maybe because the path was smoother and not much steep uphill. Throughout the whole tracking journey, I vomited 7 times, whatever I ate came out, so I basically was running on ‘my own fats?’ since even water also make me puke. the last time was shocking to me and those around me, I actually vomited blood. *faint* After peak 4, it was downhill all the way. My teammate offered to carry my bag for me coz they say I look so white, like a sheet of plain paper. Luckily I didn’t faint in the jungle, if not they sure will throw me down the hill. =.= just joking, they are great people, I noe they won’t do that to me. They were very supportive always. I saw a coal power plant after peak 4, the coals have been spread out on the ‘road’ and I thought it was a runway. I was thinking why would someone build an airport in the middle of no where, then my fren said it’s not an airport but power plant. I would consider myself a living test for the whole team, but they was a great company to be with, a very supportive team. Upon reaching the campsite, my instructor asked me to sleep on the bench. It is a another groups campsite, and another instructor thought I was sleeping there while my team already started work so he woke me up and send me away, which after that he only know that my instructor ask me to rest there was he can keep an eye on me. Before the sun finish work for the day, we quickly setup the tents and start to prepare food for dinner. Those who wanna have a bath (just dip in water la) did so in the lake, but girls were given priority and had a timeframe given before the guys can go near that area. Dinner was pretty nice; it was in fact well cooked. Some of them were very creative in mix and matching the food that was provided. After a short briefing, everyone was off to prepare things that are needed for the next day.

Day 4- Tuesday
After spending the night “under the stars and moonlight”, it was time to head back to base camp. Some of the team woke up super early to cook the breakfast and pack lunch in the mess tin. The breakfast was instant noodles, but it was super salty. Lunch was rice and another item. I ask to follow the van back as I wasn’t feeling well, and am afraid that I would slow down the whole team again. Driving back also took awhile, as the place is not really very nearby, had to pass few traffic lights. Upon reaching back to the base, I helped to unload those stuff that followed the van. After tat ‘report’ to medical bay, and rested there till lunch time and waited for my team to reach back before helping them to wash the items used before keeping it back in the store room. After finish washing all the items that need to be kept, we had a rest till dinner time. After dinner was another briefing, we thought next day we would be learning whaling and is able to go into the sea after few days of land activity, but we was wrong and was surprise when they said next day would give use ‘holiday’, which is our Solo Camping. You could see many shocked faces including me, coz we didn’t expect it to be so fast. Anyway, after the briefing, we went to take whatever items that we would need, and also pack our personal belongings and food that are provided. We needed to cook our own lunch and dinner for the next day, as well as breakfast for the following day.

Day 5- Wednesday
Morning after the ‘HOT’ seat session, we went for our next activity, Solo camping for the day till the next morning. Hot seat session was pretty interesting as other teammate takes turn to give ‘comment’ about one another. It was more of reinforcement rather than shooting other people, we focus on each other’s strength while telling them how to overcome their other weakness. It was constructive with evidence given based on the past few days experience with each other. Some said I should have more confidence in myself as I can do many things, and should be able to achieve the things that I set my eyes on if I really put in the effort and push myself beyond my own boundaries. Some even commented that I have strong will, coz even when I was sick during the tracking; I manage to finish and reach the destination. Some said if that happen on them, they would have just told the instructor that they wanna go back to base and won’t continue the whole journey.

The solo camping site is not that bad after all. We are not located too far from each other, just that maybe we cannot see each other because blocked by the trees. For me, I was given a spot that is slightly higher, and a small slope. I can see 2 girls, one on the far left, one on the far right. of course not clearly, but still able to keep an eye (by order of the instructor), he place this guys and girl nearby in case anything happens, the guy should be able to get there faster. Behind me was bushes and there was another girl’s camp located there. after setting up the tent, I just throw my bag in, roll the mat out and took a rest first since only 10 (ten) matches are given, don’t wanna waste one to cook lunch ma.. before I sleep, I saw opposite side, there was already monkey climbing down, I was so afraid that it would snatch the girl’s bag that has food inside. But it didn’t come down after all. I woke up around 4 something 5, then saw some of them start to wanna start the fire. I also started to gather some small woods and dried leaves. Few bikers pass by our camp, so they asked why I haven’t started the fire yet. I said donno how to do, then they said very easy only, take few sticks and leave, then slowly burn it up =.= My first match only lit for awhile then gone. In the end, I used 4 matches in a row, the fourth manage to light the leaves, but it soon died off after awhile. After another try or 2, I manage to start a fire that was quite ok, not too huge, so I went to get my food to be cooked. When I got back, the fire was gone, only left smoke, then I remembered ‘where there is smoke, there should be fire’, so I just fan it, and the fire came up again. Happily I cook my maggi mee, but then the ash went into my food, gone!!! So I burn the whole noodle in the fire. Meanwhile, the others manage to get their fire started and was cooking their meals already. Seeing they eating their warm meal, looks so nice and delicious. Why they can cook, I can’t leh!!! After girl, she manage to start the fire and cook, but after while it died off, she used all her matchsticks. The girl that was located behind me, I could see that she had a big fire, but she didn’t manage to cook it, coz too big cannot cook food ma, and when it became smaller, she would accidentally put out the fire by placing the mess tin on the fire, killing all the oxygen supply. After girl during her sharing said she hide in the camp, coz can’t start the camp fire, seeing other people eating their food, her tears rolled down. Some passerby said ‘so early already in her camp, sure must have finish her dinner already’ so she told them, she had taken her dinner, but in fact she didn’t manage to cook anything yet. Tears started rolling down again :’(
Soon the sun finish its work, and change shift to the moon, since my fire didn’t manage to last, I just wrapped myself in the tent and went off to sleep. Somehow I was awaken by singing, I thought to myself, that was fast it is already morning since people has woke up for prayer’s, but how wrong I was, some groups was doing karaoke singing competition nearby, which means that it was still night time and not yet morning, the night is going to be very long. I couldn’t go back to sleep after that because the mosquito keep disturbing me, and my mind is just wide awake from all the sleeping that I have had earlier during the day. I just had to force myself to sleep, and yes after waiting and waiting for morning to come, I finally saw touch lights and someone came to ask us to start packing. I felt it was the longest night of my life, the waiting and waiting, the patients and perseverance to stay where I am. The last person would start to gather people downwards, until the first person of our team, and then we leave the camp site (jungle) together. Solo camping was about learning to control our thoughts, fears, wants, and gaining control of oneself among other things. I also learn that we cannot live alone, and would not live alone, as there would always be people there for us. We just need to look around, and people would be there to help us out. Don’t think that you are alone in this world. Someone had their camp fire super huge, as tall as a person. One of the instructor asked if he wanted to call aliens. LoL!!! It was so bright and lasted the whole night, morning still burning.

Day 6- Thursday
We took the morning walk back to base, upon returning from solo camping, we rested for awhile and distributed work for the things that need to be clean up especially the mess tin which was ‘burn’ and is all black. It has to be washed by using sand to scrub it and then wash with the soup and rinse. After the sand and detergent method, it would be shining even before we started using it. It can practically be used as a mirror replacement =) we had a break till lunch where we had time to wash up, rest awhile on the bed and of course wash some clothes. After lunch, it was another activity, the Climbing wall. We had several options to choose, some had wider gap, while some closer path, but all are equally difficult, some are for advance player of course. I was introduced to climbing wall back in May 2006 when my fren wanted to try it out, and so she invited me along. I went for the class with her and have a basic climbing lesson certificate for it. Generally, you are placing your full trust in the rope, carabineer and belay device including the ATC. The most important is the person that is belaying you. Your life is basically in their hands since they are the person controlling it. Many people manage to overcome their own limits and climb to the top. Even people who think they would never be able to make it. They push themselves to the limit and made things happen. The happiness and satisfaction of achieving something was great. You could see it written on their faces.

Day 7- Friday
In the morning, we had the briefing on whaling and were given an introduction for all the equipment that is needed. After getting all the equipment and laying it out on the seaside. We were taken into the water by everyone holding hands in a circle. The water ‘team-building’ was part of getting ourselves prepared with the sea. Some people might have fear of water/ sea for that matter, and so this is needed. For safety reason, all activity that has to do with water would require us to wear a lifejacket. After getting ourselves all wet, we got into the boat and started to load the items that have been taken out from the store. When everyone was in the boat, the instructor started by teaching us how to fix the items and what they are for, and how to use it. After teaching us how to assemble the items, we was then taught on how each item should be during “sail”, “standby mode” and “overnight”. Everything was then taken down and we had to assemble everything again, this was to make sure that we knew how to fix those items. After that, we got onshore and headed for lunch. After lunch, we had to prepare the boat in “standby mode” before we set for a trail sail in the afternoon. It was fun when we started to remove the permanent and temporary anchor, and the boat started to go towards the “outside world”. As there was wind, the boat was able to sail and thus we just enjoyed the breeze and listen to further matters that we need to take note of during the sail and whaling out at sea. After being in sea and experiencing how things are like, we “park” the whaler alongside another boat/ yacht to learn how to save people if someone was to fall into the sea, or even when they need do “business”. I jumped down into the sea as a sample. The sea water was just damn salty and was chilling, cold and nice. To save someone or to hold on to someone in the water, all you need is 2 items: the float (which is solid, hit the head can faint) and a bag of “expendable” string. They said got box jellyfish in the water that I swam in, that’s why they don’t allow people to just go into the water apart from it is a high risk that they would be taking (eg: drown or push/pull by the wave/ undercurrent).

Day 8- Saturday
Team sets sail/ whaling around Pulau Pangkor towards a beach where they will spend the night under the stars (of course they have tents to sleep in). after helping them load the boat, and took some photo with them, I left the camp before they set sail because the van that is sending us was hurrying to leave. There was this one girl that I feel was KPC (kepoC), she already finish her whaling and today will set out for another new activity, stand at the beach (of course it’s OK), but keep commenting and telling people what to do, even when she is not part of the team, not even helping but asking people to do this first then that, like people donno what to do. I was standing there trying to help since it was my team, and she just keeps asking people to load this then that! I just kept quiet and let her say whatever she wants, in the end, I exploded. One of my teammate wanted to release the boat deeper into the sea and further from the shore coz the boat bottom is on the sand already, he took the rope and adjust abit, before he can take up the rope, she already said “cannot untie it, the boat will go outwards, later very hard to board. And blah blah blah” I help him untie it coz the boat is pretty heavy (about 2 ton, made of fiber. If made of wood is 3 ton.) and I think what he wants to do, so I told her “just let him do it, he knows what he is doing!” then she just said Fine! And walk off... LoL, didn’t know I had my chance to tell her off. Well, if she wanted to help us load or teach us how to load, then just give suggestion, not like she is the captain there, she don’t even know how well we work as a team. Oh ya, before that she was saying something and teach someone how to load the boat from her experience with it. But then that guy was from another team, and my teammate came to shore, she just said “aiya, I have to teach all over again, I don’t think he can explain anyway.” I was like WTF!!!! Did I even offend you before this. I don’t think I have anything to do with you lo and mind you, she is very young and has completed her Master from UPM. It’s either too easy get Master now days in public university, or she just sucks at people management!

It was certainly memory and experience of a lifetime. It might have been tough, but we sure learn things from it even if we can't explain what we learn to others. Our life might not be the same as before.
